Alcohol consumption survey

A compulsory alcohol screening can be imposed on you if you have driven with a too high blood alcohol level at a police checkpoint.
This examination will check whether you are fit to participate safely in traffic.

An alcohol screening is compulsory for the following people:

  • For experienced drivers who have driven with a blood alcohol level higher than 1.8.
  • For experienced drivers who have been stopped three times in the past five years for driving under the influence of alcohol. In which the blood-alcohol level was higher than 0.5 on one occasion.
  • For new drivers who have driven with a blood-alcohol level higher than 1.3.
  • For novice drivers who have been stopped three times in the last five years for driving under the influence of alcohol. In which the blood alcohol content was higher than 0.2 on one occasion.
  • For any driver who refused to cooperate with the police breathalyzer on one occasion.

The investigation consists of the following three parts:

  • A psychiatric examination. This involves a psychiatrist asking questions about your alcohol consumption.
  • A physical examination. Here, a doctor looks at whether there are any physical indications of alcohol abuse.
  • A blood test.
  • Sometimes also a urine test.

This examination costs about 1,500 euros.
If the result of the test is positive, you get your driving license back.
If the result of the test is negative, you will not get your driving license back. You can then attempt to get your license back after at least 1 year without alcohol consumption.
