Moped

A moped is not a motor vehicle, but a motor carriage.
The speed limit for a moped rider on the carriageway, both inside and outside built-up areas, is 45 kilometers per hour.
The speed limit for a moped rider on a bicycle/moped track within built-up areas is 30 kilometers per hour.
The speed limit for a moped rider on a bicycle/moped track outside built-up areas is 40 kilometers per hour.

A low speed moped is also a moped by law. However, the driver of a low speed moped must follow the rules that apply to cyclists.The speed limit for a low speed moped rider is 25 kilometers per hour.

Article 1e of the WVW.

  • a. motor carriage on two wheels, with a maximum design speed not exceeding 45 km/h, equipped with an internal combustion engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3 or an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated power not exceeding 4 kW, not being a disabled vehicle or a motor vehicle as referred to in subsection d;
  • b. three-wheeled motor carriage with a maximum design speed not exceeding 45 km/h, not being a vehicle for the disabled or a motor carriage as referred to in subsection d, equipped with:
  • 1°. a spark-ignition engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3,
  • 2°. an internal combustion engine with a maximum net power not exceeding 4 kW for engines other than those mentioned under 1°, or
  • 3°. an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated power not exceeding 4 kW; or
  • c. four-wheeled motor carriage, other than a vehicle for the disabled or a motor carriage referred to in subsection d, with a maximum design speed not exceeding 45 km/h and an unladen mass of less than 350 kg, not including the mass of batteries in electric vehicles, equipped with:
      • 1°. a spark-ignition engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3,
      • 2°. an internal combustion engine with a maximum net power not exceeding 4 kW for engines other than those referred to in 1°, or
      • 3°. an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated power not exceeding 4 kW;
    • d. a motor vehicle as referred to in Article 20b.

    In any case, a vehicle indicated as a moped according to the issued registration certificate is considered a moped.
