Category H – Built up area

H1 – Built-up area.

After passing this sign, the maximum speed is 50 kilometers per hour unless otherwise indicated. Therefore, the sign does not need to be combined with a sign indicating a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

The beginning of the built-up area must be clearly visible because the road environment changes compared to a road outside the area. A built-up area is characterized by buildings along the road of such size and density that a clear difference in road characteristics is emphasized.

This sign indicates that you are entering a built-up area. The sign can be placed on the right or left of the roadway.

Sometimes, the maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour is indicated by sign A1. It is also possible that when driving into a built-up area, you also enter a 30-kilometer zone.

Within built-up areas, drivers must give bus drivers the opportunity to drive away from a bus stop when the driver of that bus indicates his intention to drive away by signaling with his direction indicator. This applies not only to public transport, but also to coaches.

Sometimes the built-up area only applies to a short distance. Locally known drivers do not always reduce their speed.

The maximum speed for moped riders within built-up areas is 30 kilometers per hour. This speed only applies on moped paths. When a moped rider rides on the carriageway, the maximum speed is 45 kilometers per hour.

Snorfiets riders are not allowed to travel faster than 25 kilometers per hour, both inside and outside built-up areas.

Mopeds ride on the carriageway within built-up areas, unless there are separate bicycle/moped paths. In that case, moped riders are obliged to follow this.

Moped riders may only use bicycle lanes to overtake a vehicle turning left or to sort ahead.

H2 – End of built-up area

This sign indicates that you are leaving the built-up area. The sign can be placed on the right or left of the carriageway.

Sometimes the maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour is indicated by sign A1. It is also possible that when leaving the built-up area you also enter a 60 kilometer zone.

Outside built-up areas, you do not have to give bus drivers the opportunity to drive away from a bus stop.

Roads outside built-up areas are quite dangerous. People often drive very fast here. So many accidents happen.

Some drivers increase their speed well before this sign. Keep an eye on any drivers behind you who want to overtake.

It is not prohibited for pedestrians and cyclists, for example, to travel outside built-up areas. On the carriageway, you can also encounter all road users outside built-up areas.
