Introduction of the chapter road placement and positioning

You are obliged to keep to the right as much as possible. This does not include driving close to the curb, the verge, cyclists and parked cars. Driving on the right as much as possible means that on a carriageway with several lanes you drive in the rightmost lane.

The picture shows a carriageway with 3 lanes. Drivers are driving in each lane. This is allowed, as each driver in the picture is overtaking another vehicle. If the whole lane is empty, then you are lit to drive in the right-hand lane.

In the following situations, you do not have to drive on the right as much as possible:

  • Just before or at roundabouts.
  • When driving in a traffic jam.
  • When overtaking.
  • When you are getting in line to turn left.
  • When the lane is blocked by a red cross on the electronic signalling board above the lane.
  • When there is no space on the right.
  • When you have to obey a traffic sign or an instruction from an authorised official.
