Speed limit inside built-up areas

The following speed limits apply within built-up areas:

  • for motor vehicles 50 kilometers per hour.
  • for brommobielen 45 kilometers per hour
  • for mopeds and vehicles for disabled persons equipped with an engine:
    • 1. on the bicycle path or bicycle/moped path 30 kilometers per hour.
    • 2. on the carriageway 45 kilometers per hour.
  • for disabled vehicles, equipped with an engine, on the pavement or footpath kilometers per hour..
  • for agricultural and forestry tractors, limited-speed motor vehicles and mobile machinery, with or without a trailer: 25 kilometers per hour. On the following roads in built-up areas, a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour applies to agricultural and forestry tractors, limited-speed motor vehicles and mobile machinery, with or without a trailer:
    • roads equipped with a separate bicycle path or bicycle/moped path.
    • roads closed to cyclists; or
    • roads where a maximum speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour applies.

traffic-sign-netherlands-h1-newYou are driving within the built-up area as soon as you have passed traffic sign H1, built-up area.

The speed limit for motor vehicles is not always 50 kilometers per hour. On through roads and important entrance and exit roads, the speed limit is sometimes set at 70 kilometers per hour. Road signs then indicate a different speed limit.

In 30-kilometer-per-hour zones, the speed limit is 30 kilometers per hour. This does not apply to snorfietsen. A speed limit of 25 kilometers per hour applies to snorfietsen.

A speed limit of 15 kilometers per hour applies in a erf (home zone). This speed applies until you have left a yard.

You have to adjust the speed to the circumstances. These may include:

    • Shopping streets
    • Schools
    • Places where children play
    • A bad road surface
    • A slippery road surface
    • The weather
    • Tram and bus stops
    • Crossing points
    • Slow-moving other traffic
    • Traffic humps. These are built for different passing speeds. Most common is a passing speed of 15 to 30 kilometers per hour. Some speed bumps even require you to virtually stand still to avoid damage to the car.
  • Caution! Do not wrongly assume that the speed limit on a autoweg is always 100 kilometers per hour. This speed limit only applies outside built-up areas. The speed limit on a autoweg within the built-up area is 50 kilometers per hour, until you have passed the end of built-up area sign.
