Motor carriage

The law and the CBR distinguish between motor vehicles and motor carriages. Motor vehicles in the definition of the RVV are all motorised vehicles, except mopeds (including snorfietsen), pedal-assisted bicycles and vehicles for disabled persons, intended to be propelled other than along rails.

The definition of Motor Carriages does include mopeds: all vehicles intended to be propelled other than along rails solely or partly by a mechanical force present on or attached to the vehicle itself or by electric traction with power supplied from elsewhere, excluding pedal-assisted bicycles.

Examples of motor vehicles: car, motorbike, bus, tractor, moped, scooter, micro-mobile and moped.

Trains, trams and metros are neither motor vehicles nor motor carriages according to the Road Traffic Act.

There is no definition of motor carriages in the RVV. However, there is in the WVW:

Article 1c of the WVW:

Motor carriages: all vehicles intended to be propelled other than along rails solely or partly by a mechanical force present on or attached to the vehicle itself or by electric traction with power supplied from elsewhere, with the exception of bicycles with pedal assistance.
